Seniors Back on the Road to Volunteering! In celebration of its 4th Anniversary of service, Neighbor Ride, a volunteer-based nonprofit dedicated to decreasing isolation and improving the quality of life for Howard County’s older residents, is teaming up with the Volunteer Center Serving Howard County to promote volunteerism among those 60 and over. The wealth of talent and experience among older members of the Howard County community is a perfect fit for the ever-growing volunteer needs of local non-profit organizations and educational programs. Often, the only roadblock to getting seniors involved in volunteer activities is a lack of available transportation options. Utilizing volunteers who drive their personal vehicles, Neighbor Ride offers county residents age 60 and over low-cost transportation for volunteering, as well as for medical and personal care appointments, religious services, social outings, shopping, and other day-to-day activities. Neighbor Ride and the Volunteer Center Serving Howard County are pleased to jointly announce the establishment of the Senior Volunteer Fund, made possible by a generous contribution from the Ascend One EDGE Fund. Through the Senior Volunteer Fund, ½ price rides for older adults seeking transportation for volunteer activities will be provided by Neighbor Ride. The ½ price rides will be available for county residents age 60 and over based on funding availability; with hopes that the special discount can be extended indefinitely with support from the community. Community members
interested in participating in the Senior Volunteer Initiative are asked
to contact Neighbor Ride at 410-884-RIDE (7433) for more information
and to register as a passenger. |
